Banfield Equestrian, a world class training facility and event yard in the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside, is the result of sheer hard work, risk taking, having a dream and do everything humanly possible to make it a reality. Founded by young event rider, Callum Banfield, the journey left the start box at just 15 and has been a tackling a course of Vicarage Vees ever since...

The previous divide between grassroot and professional riders was almost as apparent as the rich and poor divide. Our world class training opportunities bridge the gap, making the best possible training accessible to absolutely everyone. Created for riders by a rider, Callum knew what he would want out of a residential training stay, and beyond great training was an experience.

An experience that creates memories, forms friendships and simply putting the enjoyment back into this ever competitive world. Anyone in the equestrian world knows what a slog it can be, especially in the winter, and sometimes we all need reminding that this meant to be fun!

Now attracting riders of all levels from all around the country, we have riders visit from Newcastle, Scotland, Essex, Norfolk and the Isle of Wright, to experience the #BanfieldBubble and train with eventing's elite.

Providing training with six time olympian Mary King, alongside daughter Emily; current world champion, Ros Canter; youth performance coach, Caroline Moore; Badminton 2019 champion, Piggy French; Team GB Olympic rider, Gemma Tattersall, and more, Banfield Equestrian is the go to place for some of the best training in the country.

Callum held his first event at The All England Jumping Course, Hickstead at 15 in 2016 with over 150 riders for dressage and arena eventing with huge success, quickly igniting a spark to develop things further, and finding a passion for thriving on adreneline.

Whilst holding a series of competitions, Callum left school at 16 to open a livery yard in Surrey. Originally with 1 livery, quickly expanding month by month to then have 23 liveries 7 months later, shortly followed by taking on a neighbouring yard of 25 horses. After realising this wasn't sustainable things began to be filtered and prioritised, eventually coming to the conclusion this just wasn't going to work.

Suddenly Callum found himself at 18 in a 24 box yard, 3 hours from home, a list of goals and an even longer list of bills. Going into fight or flight mode, things immediately got busy and week on week was turning around groups of riders who came to stay to experience the world class residential training opportunities on offer.

Callum has an enthusiastic and theoretical teaching approach designed to set strong foundations, build a successful system and boost confidence through safe and positive riding.

Following training and working closely with many of the best riders in the world, whilst adding fresh ideas, a strong system of training has been developed by aiming to keep in balance, teach horse and rider to be independent of one another and be able to hold horse and rider accountable for their different responsibilities.

Quickly developing a reputation for educating and producing riders to understand how and why to implement techniques to benefit your performance.

"Motivation is chimp-driven. It is a feeling based on emotion. Motivation generally happens when there is a great reward to gain or when you are suffering so badly that you want things to change. Motivation is helpful to drive us on but it is not essential to success. It is unrealistic to expect to 'feel motivated' everyday, no matter what you are doing. The problem with motivation is that it works on feelings from the chimp and these can shift very quickly.

Commitment, on the other hand, comes from the human and does not depend on feelings. Commitment means following a plan even if you don't feel like it that day. For example, a surgeon can't say halfway through an operation, 'Do you know, I just don't feel motivated to finish this, so I'll stop now!' Motivation doesn't matter, it is commitment that will finish the operation."
